T-110.5200 Laboratory Works on Information Security (4 cr)

Overview

Signing up for the course

Sign up to the course through Oodi. The first lecture is mandatory, you will not be accepted to the course if you have not signed up and are not present on the first lecture.

Contents

The aim of the course is to gather practical experience from different situations and problems related to data communication software. The course deals with analyzing network protocols, configuring network components and reading networking standards.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for this course are T-110.2100 and T-110.4100. Other parallel courses offered by Electrical engineering department are ok. You will also need some some Unix/Linux experience, since you will need to use many command-line tools.

Passing the Course

The extent of the course is 4 credits. It consists of individual laboratory assignments and students must pass 4 of them in order to pass the course.  Each assignment is a laboratory work and you will need to submit a written report of each of them. The reports are checked and scored by course personnel. It is recommended that students familiarize themselves with the subject of an assignment beforehand, so that the assignment can be finished within reasonable time. Be aware, that the assignments vary in difficulty and amount of work.

The course is graded 0-5. You will need to get at least 75% of points total from the assignments to pass the course. This means, that should you have difficulty getting some of the assignments done, you can still pass the course by doing well in other assignments.

Remember that you have to do only four exercise rounds, even though there are five available:

If you are also taking course T-110.5100: Do the exercise rounds 2, 3, 4 and 5.

If you are not taking T-110.5100: Do the exercise round 1 and then select three of the four remaining assignments (the last four assignments are of the same difficulty level). UPDATE!

Important: The course is done individually. You must write the reports using your own words, so that course staff can be sure you really know the answer to the question! Plagiarism (i.e. copying from another source) is not tolerated, and will result in a failed assignment - or worse, depending on the case . When you really need to refer to someone else's text, do it by quoting and/or referencing it properly. It is rarely necessary to quote more than one sentence.

Lectures and Material

Mandatory starting lecture is on Tuesday 8.9.2009 08:15 in T1.

There is no course book. Each assignment includes references to the material related to that assignment.

Laboratory environment

Each student is given access to three virtual hosts on which the assignments are to be completed. The hosts can be accessed remotely.

Network topology

Tips

When accessing multiple host through terminal windows, one might get confused which was the right host. You can change the default command prompt with the following command: export PS1="[\u@\h \W] gw \$". In this case, "gw" was added to the prompt to indicate a gateway host.

If you are sort of disk space in your virtual machines, you can make more room by removing other kernel versions than the one in use (uname(1)). However, you need to check that the grub configuration file is valid, i.e. it points to an existing xen kernel.

e.g. input: yum remove kernel-xen-2.6.18-128.7.1.el5

A: No, it cannot be included twice. You must do 4 other assignments in one of the courses.
